  • Intro to my Bible study tool about worship

*** How do the following two passages relate to each other?

    Hebrews 13:8-16

“Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is [always] the same,

yesterday, today, [yes] and forever (to the ages).

      Do not be carried about by different {and} varied and alien teachings;

for it is good for the heart to be established {and} ennobled {and} strengthened

by means of grace (God's favor and spiritual blessing)

and not [to be devoted to] foods [rules of diet and ritualistic meals],

which bring no [spiritual] benefit {or} profit to those who observe them.

We have an altar from which those who serve {and} worship in the tabernacle have no right to eat.

For when the blood of animals is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin,

the victims' bodies are burned outside the limits of the camp.

Therefore Jesus also suffered {and} died outside the [city's] gate

in order that He might purify {and} consecrate the people

through [the shedding of] His own blood {and} set them apart as holy [for God].

Let us then go forth [from all that would prevent us] to Him outside the camp [at Calvary],

bearing the contempt {and} abuse {and} shame with Him.

For here we have no permanent city,

but we are looking for the one which is to come.

Through Him, therefore, let us constantly {and} at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise,

which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge {and} confess {and} glorify His name.

Do not forget {or} neglect to do kindness {and} good,

to be generous {and} distribute {and} contribute to the needy,

for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

    Romans 12:1-3

“I appeal to you therefore, brethren, {and} beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God,

to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties]

as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God,

which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service {and} spiritual worship.

Do not be conformed to this world (this age),

[fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs],

but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind

[by its new ideals and its new attitude],

so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God,

{even} the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].

For by the grace (unmerited favor of God) given to me

                                  I warn everyone among you

not to estimate {and} think of himself more highly than he ought

[not to have an exaggerated opinion of his own importance],

but to rate his ability with sober judgment,

each according to the degree of faith apportioned by God to him.”

*** Do you worship Abba Father this way?

    1 Chronicles 16:8-13, & 23-29

    [David said to the Israelites]

“Oh give thanks to the LORD,

            call on His name;

make known His doings among the peoples!

Sing to Him, sing praises to Him.

Meditate on {and} talk of all His wondrous works {and} devoutly praise them!

Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the LORD!

      Seek the LORD and His strength;

yearn for {and} seek His face {and} to be in His presence continually!

[Earnestly] remember the marvelous deeds which He has done,

His miracles, and the judgments He uttered [as in Egypt],

oh you offspring of [Abraham and] of Israel His servants, you children of Jacob,

                        His chosen ones!….

Sing to the LORD, all the Earth; show forth from day to day His salvation.

Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all peoples.

            For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised;

He also is to be [reverently] feared above all so-called gods.

For all the gods of the people are [lifeless] idols,

but the LORD made the heavens.

            Honor and majesty are [found] in His presence;

strength and joy are [found] in His sanctuary.

Give to the LORD, you families of the peoples,

give to the LORD glory and strength.

Give to the LORD the glory due His name.

            Bring an offering and come before Him;

Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness {and} in holy array.”

  • My USA Glads (written in 2004)

Note:    Recently I was told that during the upcoming trip with my wife and mother-in-law, I must share USA with pride as if I have become un-patriotic since moving to Germany last year.  But the Apostle Paul wrote that we should not boast about anything except about our Lord.  So, I decided to write a list of what I am glad about in relation to the USA.  They are not in order of importance.  They are in sort of chronological order as I realized them from December 20, 1946 to June 7, 2003 (my time in the USA).  This list will show that I am still glad to be a United States citizen.  Via the Internet and CNN, daily I read a lot of the USA news and do a lot of praying for people in the USA.  In my view, there are still more “goods” than “bads”, especially in the remaining freedoms, but the “bads” are rapidly increasing because of fears and selfishness.  The USA is in danger of being conquered or destroyed.

    1.     The United States of America had the most wonderful beginning in world history because its Founding Fathers were believers in religious freedom, God, and the Bible.  (Most nations at that time were Roman Catholic Church and were not to read the Bible personally.  The Queen of England protested against that church by promoting the Calvin Bible in all English homes.)  The Founding Fathers also realized from history that they should form a federal government with checks and balances of political power called a republic.  They realized  that every democracy had become either a dictatorship or anarchy.  Their first attempt to write an agreement to create a republic form of national government was The Articles of Confederation which was quickly rejected.  But their second attempt in The Constitution with the Bill of Rights provided a way for a Federal Government that has never had a violent change of power in over 200 years.  Also, the flag of the United States is unique and symbolic.  I am glad about all of what was mentioned in this paragraph,  but the goodness of the Founding Fathers and the religious aspects of early USA history have been omitted in most school textbooks.  I am also saddened that now the political leaders and most of the people think the USA has always been democracy (it actually started to become one in 1914) and are for socialistic changes along with lying and slander in election campaigns.  I hate politics now.

    2.     I am glad about most of the history of the United States up to the Civil War in the mid-1800s.  There were many examples of compassion and there was a wonderful pioneer spirit for exploring westward showing so much courage.  Also, I am glad that so many people of various religious faiths were able to peacefully begin churches throughout the country.  But I am concerned about the increasing religious prejudices.  I have been a victim of such many times.

    3.     I am glad that the Civil War did not ruin the United States and that reconciliation between the states was accomplished.

    4.     I am glad for all of the soldiers in the wars that USA has been involved in who were fighting in order to help others have freedom too.

    5.     I am glad that the USA became the leading country in the world to provide for missionary work in all other countries.  And that it helped Europe and Japan recover from World War II.  I believe that God blessed the USA more than any country because of all of the unselfishness the USA showed in its beginnings, in its missionary work, and its foreign aid.  All but one country have not paid the USA back for the loans given to them after World War II.

    6.     I am glad that so many people of different cultures have been able to succeed in the USA and for all of the inventions created by them.  The USA has become spoiled with conveniences and low prices for so many things compared to most all of the other countries in the world.  That is why so many want to relocate to the USA.

    7.     I am glad that non-Caucasian individuals have more rights and opportunities in the USA than in any other country in the world.

    8.     I am glad that I was born into a family which manifested a lot of good morals and ethics, and that I had parents who stayed together for 43 years.

    9.     I am glad that the USA used to have a good public school education system (up until 1970).  I was mostly educated before the liberalizing of it.  We did not need prayer and Bible teaching in schools because we had mostly responsible teachers and parents who exemplified and taught proper learning and relationship ethics.

    10.    I am glad that I have never had my life threatened by others or disasters (earthquakes, weather-related), which are common in many countries.  I have been amazed by how so many citizens have helped in times of disaster in the USA, like in Florida after hurricanes, in the Midwest states after flooding, and after the 9/11 attacks in New York City.  And look how San Francisco rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake caused fires and how quickly New York City is again the most popular tourist place again.

    11.    I am glad to have lived in a country that had so many wonderful places to see: museums etc. in cities, National Parks, and amusement parks, etc.  I have been able to see a lot of such in my 56 years in the USA.

    12.    I am glad that I have been able to enjoy sports and marriage.  In many countries, many individuals cannot afford the former and the latter is arranged by their parents.  But I am very sad that there are so many problems in both of those areas now mainly because of the wrong uses of money and selfishness.  Most pro teams have such a high turn-over (changes of personnel) because of free agency and trades. Most marriages end up in divorce or at least unhappiness because they were started for the wrong reasons.  But still there is a lot of good in both sports and marriage.

Concluding remark:   1 Corinthians 10:13 indicates that God knows how much we each can take in challenges and temptations.  He knew that I could not take the dangers and oppressions found in most countries and so He had me born in the United States of America so that I could live in the best time of its history.  I am forever grateful for that.  So many more good experiences than the bad experiences.  The USA has been the best country in the world for many reasons and I have always been a loyal thankful citizen.  I will never be against the USA, only against the obvious wrong in it.  I hope that there will be Christian revival to help return the USA back to a republic, but I doubt that such will happen because of the increasing selfishness and hatreds.  The just mentioned daily grieves me.  I tried to help go against such, but was not given ministry opportunities to do so.  I am now using the Internet to do a small effort of sharing about what pleases God.  What displeases Him is obvious.  I want to help others have proper desires and goals in their thinking and doing.  If I did not have the life that I was very blessed to have in the United States of America, I would not have the just indicated compassionate desires.  I believe such was so prevalent in many citizens of the early USA population and that was greatness in history.

  • Active or Passive?

The following is from Webster’s 1828 Dictionary with emphasis of mine indicated by italicizing:

    Active

    ACT'IVE, a. [L. activus.]

    1. That has the power or quality of acting; that contains the principle of action, independent of any visible external force; as, attraction is an active power; or it may be defined, that communicates action or motion, opposed to passive, that receives action; as, the active powers of the mind.

    2. Having the power of quick motion, or disposition to move with speed; nimble; lively; brisk; agile; as an active animal.

    Hence,

    3. Busy; constantly engaged in action; pursuing business with vigor and assiduity; opposed to dull, slow, or indolent; as an active officer. It is also opposed to sedentary, as an active life.

    4. Requiring action or exertion; practical; operative; producing real effects; opposed to speculative; as, the active duties of life.

    Passive

P`ASSIVE, a. [L. passivus, from passus, patior, to suffer.]

    1. Suffering; not acting, receiving or capable of receiving impressions from external agents. We were passive spectators, not actors in the scene.

The mind is wholly passive in the reception of all its simple ideas.

God is not in any respect passive.

    2. Unresisting; not opposing; receiving or suffering without resistance; as passive obedience; passive submission to the laws.

Passive prayer, among mystic divines, is suspension of the activity of the soul or intellectual faculties, the soul remaining quiet and yielding only to the impulses of grace.

    Action

    AC'TION, n. [L. actio.]

    1. Literally, a driving; hence, the state of acting or moving; exertion of power or force, as when one body acts on another; or action is the effect of power exerted on one body by another; motion produced. Hence, action is opposed to rest. Action, when produced by one body on another, is mechanical; when produced by the will of living being, spontaneous or voluntary.

    2. An act or thing done; a deed. The Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him are actions weighed. 1 Samuel 2.

    3. In mechanics, agency; operation; driving impulse; effort of one body upon another; as, the action of wind upon a ship's sails. Also the effect of such action.

    4. In ethics, the external signs or expression of the sentiments of a moral agent; conduct; behavior; demeanor; that is, motion or movement, with respect to a rule or propriety.

    6. In oratory, gesture or gesticulation; the external deportment of the speaker, or the accommodation of his attitude, voice, gestures, and countenance to the subject, or to the thoughts and feelings of the mind.

    What is passive thinking?

    What is active thinking?

    What is active listening?

    What is passive listening?

    What is passive praying?

    What is active praying?

For each the following, are you active or passive?  Explain how.

    1.       sports playing

    2.       box or computer game playing

    3.       sports watching

    4.       watching a mystery or action movie

    5.       romance

    6.       community service

    7.       church fellowshipping before and after services and in church social meetings

    8.       church work days

    9.       worship

    10.      listening to church leaders’ prayers

    11.      listening to sermons

    12.      Bible study discussion group

Consider what these two Bible passages indicate about active Christianity:

    Jude 3 & 20-23

“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation,

it was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you

that you should earnestly contend for the faith

which was once delivered to the saints.”

    “But you, beloved,

building up yourselves on your most holy faith,

           praying in the Holy Spirit,

keep yourselves in the love of God,

looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.

And of some have compassion, making a difference:

And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire,

hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

    1 Corinthians 15:54-58

“But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable,

always abounding in the work of the Lord,

forasmuch as you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

Which of the twelve activities in the above “active or passive” exercise do you need become more active in?

  • 2/15/09 update

    Hi all,

Hope that you might have good news to share.  I do:

Friday afternoon after the 7 hours of work and a physical therapy session, Dolo came into our living room beaming with divine joy.  She told me that her boss sent a few private patients to her and liked her suggestion for shortening the hand cast for one of them.  After her last meeting with the head doctor about a month ago, she thought that he didn't really want her to remain there.  She can't be fired, but she could be transferred if it was apparent that if her left leg prohibited her from doing the nurse work.  The big nerve in that leg causes pain still.  But after the 3 fulltime days, Dolo finally felt that she can do what is needed.  She was forced to stop just doing 6 hours per day because her co-worker had to go Tuesday night to south Germany to see her dog's sister give birth to her first litter.

Wednesday evening at church, we learned more about our wonderful God and predestination.  Dolo had never heard such teaching.  My conclusion: Remembering how sovereign God is, can help one to stop worrying or being overly concerned.  Last year, many times I was overly concerned about the Presidential campaign in the USA when I forgot about the sovereignty of God and predestination.  Dolo and I felt divine peace on the way home.  You would be blessed by listening to the teaching.  The outline is good, but didn't have all of the Bible verses mentioned.

On Friday evening we heard Pastor Derik Morris preach about God being our passion and later the Bible discussion group about the work of God's prophets.  Also, the Holy Spirit guided me to a good source of more information about Ephesians and it was titled "Ephesians-- The Gospel of Relationships".  Ironically when I was in Albuquerque, during a boring sermon the Holy Spirit gave me the following:

Chapter 1:  Relating to the true Christian God (Who is in three divine persons).

Chapter 2:  Relating to God's grace and deliverance from sin and religion.  [This should be true Christian daily sanctification, not just at the time of initial conversion.]

Chapter 3:  Relating to the dispensation of grace, God's promises, and the love of Jesus Christ.

Chapter 4:  Relating to true Christian unity, the Church, and righteous living.

Chapter 5:  Relating to true Christian living and submission.

Chapter 6:  Relating to family members, employment, and spiritual warfare.

A wonderful song and dramatization about helping others:

Last Sabbath morning, Dolo and I listened to the last two lectures of the Pastor Finley seminar about the Holy Spirit, "Empowered By the Spirit", from  http://www.forestlakechurch.org/CatDetail.asp?CatID=251 .  We highly recommend that you take time to listen/watch the 5 messages: "When the Spirit Falls", "Living the Spirit-Filled Life", "Strange Fire on Church Altars", "Pentecost Repeated!", and "End-Time Symbols of the Spirit".

This Sabbath morning, we were going to listen to some sermons about apostasy but there location in the HIBC website had been moved.  So the Holy Spirit had me go to http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Grace_to_You_Video/ and we listened to Pastor John MacArthur's 3-part sermon titled "The Impossibility of Salvation" with the testimony of actor Kurt Cameron.  The sermons were based on Luke 18:18-30 and we both learned more than we knew before about that account of Jesus Christ and the rich young ruler who wanted "to inherit eternal life".

    Our Response

    GODLY FEAR.

o       This is the beginning of all wisdom and knowledge. Proverbs 1:7; 9:10

o       The "Angel of the LORD" encamps around those who have this fear. Psalm 34:7.

o       We are commanded to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12-13

o       UNBELIEVERS have no fear of God. Romans 3:18

    REAL HUMILITY.

o       "God's absolute sovereignty humbles as nothing else does or can humble, and brings the heart into lowly submission before God, causing us to relinquish our own self-will and making us delight in the perception and performance of the Divine will." A.W. Pink.

o       "He must increase and I must decrease." John 3:30

    JOYFUL OBEDIENCE.

o       As we see God for who He really is we are filled with AWE which leads to joyful obedience.

o       Ignorance of who God is leads to disobedience. Exodus 5:2; Deuteronomy 28:47-38

o       Those with a Godly fear pray each day for God to do exactly what His Word teaches –

"O Lord, direct my feet in Your way!"

    SILENCES our COMPLAINING

o       Since this world is all about God and nothing we have is really ours then those who understand God bless His name no matter what happens. Job 1:21

o       When things do not go my way I can be confident that they are going God's way! Romans 8:28; Ephesians 1:11

    REAL WORSHIP

o     Our worship is as DEEP and SINCERE as our God is GREAT.

o     Our worship comes from the REAL AWE inside of us.
